About Us
The Studio
The Ontwerpwerkplaats is an interdisciplinary spatial design studio based on the cooperation of designer Gijs Niemeijer and architect Floor van Ditzhuyzen. They share a mutual interest in interior design and small-scale architecture and started designing and making furniture 20 years ago. Gradually, the focus shifted to spatial design, both interior and exterior. This twofold approach provides a productive interaction between the design of objects and the spaces they inhabit.
The studio is equipped with a workshop for the production of models and prototypes. This combination of facilities offers room for experimenting with materials and techniques. Thus we have both the knowledge and the experience to develop and realize a spatial design, with a highly developed sense for materials and detailing.
The Human Scale
Our strength lies in designing on the human scale, ranging from furniture, interior design to public space. Our portfolio ranges from custom-designed furniture, interior design to the transformation of existing buildings and urban spaces. We choose to work on a scale that we master from start to completion, working closely with the client, selected advisors and contractors. Over time we build long-lasting relationships with both private and public clients.
How We Work
Good design results from the synergy between client and designer. We explore the possibilities of a space, working closely with both the client and users, examining the dormant desires for the future. The needs and wishes of the client, the existing context and the future use are our starting points for planning and spatial design. We are small but flexible: when a project requires additional expertise we can rely on our network of trusted advisors, specialists and contractors. The aesthetics of a design evolve in a self-evident way from the selected functional and spatial solutions.
